Mark Warren Jacques is a Portland based visual artist.

Mark seems to me to be the perfect example of the new Romantic movement that seems to be emerging in the visual arts. The trend is typified by the use of simplistic form and a striking combination use of color. Often the artist uses, the two to convey pseudo -religiously themed subject matter.

The idea of pairing video as a compliment to poetry is not new. Nor is this particular take on the combination of the two; it seems the video creates a plausible scene in which the poet, or speaker, have come to their particular feeling and, thus, what I would like to call the "atmosphere" of the poem.

What I find interesting about this video is the fact that it seems to be used as a device for marketing a collection of poems (as evidence, consider the we address at the end of the video).

It is an interesting sort of question to ask how people in general decide which sorts of books they choose to read or consume.

There is a realist point here that if poems can be sucessfully marketed via poem and video then no small to medium sized publishing house can afford to miss out on what is really very inexpensive marketing.

Issues Project Room is an innovative, exciting gallery in Brooklyn, New York. Last month, they custom-built a 15 channel hemispherical speaker system and produced what they called the Floating Points Festival. The festival featured Hisham Bharoocha, Morton Subotnick, Stephen Vitiello, Zeena Parkins, Suzanne Thorpe, C. Spencer Yeh, and Tony Conrad.

Online journals for literature, in my opinion, have yet to live up to their potential. Remember when blogs first took off? There was so much optimism about the free, and cheap, dissemination of information.

It was more democratic, internet enthusiasts argued, for media to be spread so cheaply. Well, that may or may not be true (it seems to me that the high quality reporting of almost every major newspaper has been sacrificed in the last 5 years due to the cheap cost of accessing information causing a limiting, not expansion, of high quality journalism.

Fazil Say is an amazing Turkish Piano player that combines modal techniques with an acute sense of beauty and fragility.

He has said elsewhere that he composed this while walking through a crowded fair. The experience of this piece is immediate and emotional, but some how mediated; as though the memories' recount of events that were either too painful or to wonderful to record.

There are music labels and then there MUSIC LABELS. Numero is a label that prides itself on it's obscureness and, in a way that is almost forgotten, that labels at one point represented a certain kind of endorsement and the label that a particular artist found themselves on directly reflected on the quality (or lack of quality) of the band.

Numero is refreshing and exciting. It will be interesting to see if they can create a sustainable business model with this sort of idealistic vision. Without any further ado, let me introduce you to the Numero Eccentric Group:

You can blame it on the Summertime or the fact that I have always had a penchant for that laid- back, sun soaked Brazilian music, but lately I just can't get enough of the stuff.

Having grown tired of the typical "Girl from Ipanema" covers I started looking a little further out and discovered a goldmine (or a sandtrap, if you will) in the form of Sergio Mendes and have fallin in love with him and his wonderful music.

The music is not what you might consider pure Bossa Nova-- far from it-- instead Sergio and his crew opt for a tropical flavored mish mash of influences from Hip Hop- to Funk- to Jazz- to, Bossa Nova. The result is an irrestable mix.

Sergio's career spans an impressive 30 years and includes 35 albums. He has performed with a who's who of current Neo-Soul and Hip Hop including The Black Eyed Peas, Erykah Badu, Jurassic 5, India.Arie, John Legend, Justin Timberlake, Q-Tip, and even Stevie Wonder.

His most recent album, "Encanto" features the single "Funky Bahia"

This is a piece from a brooklyn based visual artists known simply as Lala.

Personally, I like the work because, while I think there is a lot of this going on, I think this example in particular shows a strong sensibility for colour and for layout. I think that the overall emotional effect of the subject matter (creepy) is rendered mute by the barrage of color.

I was really sorry to hear about Merce Cunningham passing away. Merce was a luminary in modern dance as a choreographer, dancer, costume designer, and collaborator.

On NPR, they have been playing old interviews with Merce. What strikes me about the interviews is how honest, and plain spoken he is. Don't get me wrong; I am sure he is a very difficult man to work with, most really successful people are.

I suppose it didn't hurt that he sounded my a grandfather when he talked to Terri Gross.

In his earlier work, Richard Caldicott used Tupperware containers as the subject for his photographs, elevating these common household objects to objects of beauty. Piling vibrantly colored plastic cups and bowls, he created abstract formations that were like eye-popping op-art paintings.

His concern was the metamorphosis of the everyday, which for him has something almost alchemical about it. This went one step further in photography, by chemically transforming his constructions into two-dimensional pictures at the touch of a button. The work shows that he was aiming for a kind of transmutation of the functionality of everyday objects.

Caldicott refers to his latest works as “Constructions,” which not only suggests that he is manually making the things he photographs, but also creates a connection to constructivism and architecture. In this series, he leaves the realm of using specific objects, and deals directly with abstraction. He makes collages and assemblages, and then photographs them multiple times. The transparencies are then overlapped in different formations to get the final image.

Artist Statement:
This is a project I started when I found 541,795 pictures of sunsets searching the word “sunset” on the image hosting website, Flickr. I cropped just the suns from these pictures and uploaded them to Kodak, making 4" x 6" machine prints from them.

For each installation, the title reflects the number of hits I got searching "sunset" on Flickr on the day I made/print the piece – for example, the title of the piece for the Gallery of Modern Art, Australia, was “2,303,057 Suns From Flickr (Partial) 9/25/07” and for the New York Photo Festival it was "3,221,717 Suns From Flickr (Partial) 3/31/08" - the title itself becoming a comment on the ever increasing use of web-based photo communities, and a reflection of the ubiquity of pre-scripted collective content there. I think it's peculiar that the sun, the quintessential life giver, constant in our lives, symbol of enlightenment, spirituality, eternity, all things unreachable and ephemeral, omnipotent provider of optimism and vitamin D, and so universally photographed, finds expression on the internet, the most virtual of spaces equally infinite but within a closed electrical circuit. Looking into this cool electronic space one finds a virtual window onto the natural world.

I don't usually include novels in my "things I like" forum (unless they relate directly to the arts), but for this one I had to make an exception.

Throughout this excellent piece of fiction from a rising (already risen?) star of the American fiction genre, there is a question that keeps coming up: do the stories have the power to change our lives?

It is an interesting question. Every day it seems some tells me that I need to see this movie or read that book.

What exactly do I hope to gain out of reading or watching?

We can expand the point and consider what exactly one hopes to get out of going to a gallery, or listening to a band.

Using painting, drawing and abstraction as markers of a space outside of the verbal and within the visible, my work examines slow and sensate exchanges between perception, matter, and psychology that develop in peripheral spaces over time. Searching for meaning in the minor and the overlooked, my practice works on dislocating hierarchical terms of the sublime to focus on the links between perception and emotion as they unfold in unspoken events of cognitive illumination. Each piece is developed slowly through stages of meditative procedures, abrupt change, and actions of chance, working towards creating a compressed expanse of time that echoes the intense shifts in which we "see" in a new light, both inwardly and outwardly. The works open a gradually revealing field for optical intensities, luminous intervals, individual discoveries, and opportunities for silence.

A quick moment of reflection:

how would you, as an artist, feel about someone walking through your installation with a camera. A further question: what is lost in seeing an installation in a mediated format (i.e. on a computer scene as opposed to in person)?

To me, as an artist, an installation is to remind us of the primacy of sight in real life over that in a mediated experience. I am absolutely convinced (and I don't think this is controversial) that the mediated experience lacks in some way or other when compared to an unmediated experience.

It takes away an artist's right to surprise or to keep the viewer guessing. Think of anytime you have gotten angry at someone for telling you the ending of a movie without first giving you a "spoiler alert."

That being said, there are positive effects of Kalm's videos.

Celebrity. People know what you look like because James makes sure to talk to you in the video.

Exposure. Given the reality that most people find out about art shows/ artists through the internet they risk the possibility of having missed some free exposure (which installation art is really in need of)/ building a base for your art

$$$. Increased exposure means an increased base for your work.

Consider, finally, the following about installation art when considering the role of a funding base for installation art:

if you make installation art 1) you are not selling something immediately commodifiable and 2) it is necessarily resource heavy (7 rooms for two months in new york plus living expenses of two artist also dwelling in NYC).

Deitch projets

Deitch Projects is pleased to present Black Acid Co-op, the third collaborative project of Justin Lowe and Jonah Freeman. Their first installation Hello Meth Lab In The Sun (with Alexandre Singh), commissioned by Ballroom Marfa, consisted of a labyrinthine assemblage of rooms, hallways, closets and observation platforms. A variation entitled Hello Meth Lab With A View then traveled to The Station in Miami, FL, curated by Shamim Momin and Nate Lowman and produced by Eleanor Cayre, where it was installed in a duplex apartment. Their new piece continues the themes of previous versions specifically that of alchemy in a modern context and community, ritual and psychosis.

Black Acid Co-Op is the moniker for a counter-culture enclave embedded in the metropolis. In this incarnation, the artists shift the focus from the production of illegal drugs to sites of sub-cultural groups and how they are situated in the larger urban environment. The installation will expand on the notions relating to the connection between counter-culture and industrial society resulting in a spatial collage that extends itself into a vast architectural setting.

Despite the strong contrast of scenes, the entire installation will feel as if it is a unified system of spaces, interconnected and functioning together. Ducts, wires and tubes traverse rooms creating a semblance of an organism: architecture as body, electricity as capillaries, and volumes as organs. And the intended use of many of the sites will feel transformed or hybridized: factories have become homes, kitchens are used as drug labs, the radical chic living room is frozen in a museum, the high-rise is carved into makeshift maze to evade the law.

Kenneth Anger was born in Santa Monica, California as Kenneth Wilbur Angelmyer[1] and attended the Maurice Kossloff Dancing School with Shirley Temple and Judy Garland. He gained fame and notoriety from the publication of the French version of Hollywood Babylon in Paris in 1959, a tell-all book of the scandals of Hollywood's rich and famous. A pirated (and incomplete) version was first published in the U.S. in 1965. The official U.S. version was not published until 1974.

He became fascinated with the supernatural and Aleister Crowley, as well as becoming an adherent of Crowley's religion of Thelema, sometime in his late teens. Many of his films reflect occult themes.

Paul Jeffrey Sharits (February 7, 1943, Denver, Colorado - July 8, 1993, Buffalo, New York)

Paul Sharits was a visual artist, best known for his work in "experimental" or avant-garde filmmaking, particularly what became known as the Structural film movement, along with artists such as Tony Conrad, Hollis Frampton, and Michael Snow.

His film work primarily focused on installations using one or all of the following: infinate film loops, multiple projectors, and experimental soundtracks, as in his film Shutter Interface(1975,) recently shown at Greene Naftali Gallery in New York City (Feb 18-Apr 11, 2009).

He was born in Denver, Colorado and earned a BFA in Painting at The University of Denver's School of Art where he was a protege of Stan Brakhage. He also attended Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana where he received an MFA in Visual Design. In July 1960, he married Frances Trujillo Niekerk, and in 1965 they had a son, Christopher. They divorced in 1970.

He was subsequently a teacher at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Antioch College, and SUNY Buffalo (where he was hired by Gerald O'Grady along with Conrad and Frampton).

His works of the 60s, when he received the widest acclaim, included influential "flicker" films such as Ray Gun Virus, Piece Mandala/End War, N:O:T:H:I:N:G, T,O,U,C,H,I,N,G ("starring" poet David Franks), and S:TREAM:S:S:ECTION:S:ECTION:S:S:ECTIONED. His works of the 70s were among the forerunners of contemporary installation art. Themes of violence permeate his work.

His work is distributed by The Film-Makers' Cooperative and Canyon Cinema.

Son Christopher Sharits suggests on the memorial website (see External Links) that Sharits suffered from bipolar disorder.

This started out as an introduction to another scene in a feature length documentary. It has now taken on a bit of a life of it's own, showing in 15 or so festivals and has just won the USA film fest which is Academy qualified. The clay artist was Jon Grigsby, and almost all of the 4,000 or so photos that make up the animation were lit by candlelight.

Its primary mission is the diffusion of the works in its collection, as far as possible in their original format, to cultural structures such as non-profit making organisations, cinemas, museums, universities, galleries and festivals. To fulfil this mission, Light Cone's structure is that of a filmmakers' co-operative, assuring authors (or the rights-holders) the ownership of both the physical support and the moral rights of the works.

The collection, the result of 25 years' work, holds nearly 3000 films, videos and digital works. Annually, Light Cone organises a series of screenings for an audience of professional cultural programmers, which presents new works in distribution (the “Preview Show”).

This is a description of his newest work (2007) that was recently screened at the Ann Arbor Film Festival

"Film of the sea @(2007/mini-DV/12min)

A projector projects a film within the film of a blue monochrome seascape onto a wall. Through the use of stop motion animation, blue paint appears to flow out from the frame of the projected image of the sea. The blue paint level rises to fill the entire room, leaving an empty white screen in opposition. The relationship between the projected image and its painted representation, the negative and positive space within the projected film and the room in which the film is projected, shifts constantly throughout the film like the infinite variations of waves in the sea.

This work took four month to complete at the Yokohama Museum of Art. The residency resulted in two works: an installation version "Wall of the Sea" with three synchronized screens, and a single channel version "Film of the Sea". "Wall of the Sea" actualizes the idea of an expanded cinema as elements within the film literally flow outside its framework. The boundaries between film, painting, performance and sculpture are also collapsed as the moving image is realized in the space.

The main theme in "Film of the Sea" is repetition. The repetition of the moving images is echoed in the soundtrack. Long silences, three music works on water by the Morris label, simulated film projector noise using voice and water sounds are manipulated and repeated in the composition by ADACHI Tomomi."

Devotion investigates the extremely complex and heirarchical relationships among a committed group of Japanese filmmakers who dedicated up to 30 years of their lives making films for one man-Ogawa Shinsuke.

Members of Ogawa Pro filmed the student movement of the late 60's; the fight by farmers to save their land from government confiscaton for the Narita airport at Sanrizuka; and the village life of a small farming community, Magino Village, in northern Japan.

These heartbreaking and sometimes funny stories have never been told on film before. Rare footage, stills, and diaries with interviews with Oshima Nagisa, Hara Kazuo and Robert Kramer make this historical inquiry visually exciting as well as valuable.

This video documentary centers on the questions of civil liberties and cultural differences in a society beginning to open as one woman searches for her own ethnic roots, identity and family history in Ukraine. Issues of human rights, anti-Semitism, homophobia, feminism and a divided and economically-depressed country are encountered as I, a feminist activist and pioneer of lesbian cinema, return to a "homeland" full of struggling as people search for a new post-glasnost identity.

I found old political, societal and cultural barriers collapsing but without new ones to replace them. In this time of flux, there remains much conflict over the establishment of fixed points of social reference in Ukraine. That makes this tape in its search for personal and national identity even more compelling for Ukrainians, a general audience, and the many, many North Americans and Western Europeans who are from a Central European heritage.

What is Black Metal?

"Black metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal. It often employs fast tempos, shrieked vocals, highly distorted guitars played with tremolo picking, double-kick drumming, and unconventional song structure.

During the 1980s, certain thrash metal bands established a prototype for black metal. This so-called First Wave included bands such as Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer and Celtic Frost.[1] A Second Wave emerged in the early 1990s, which consisted primarily of Norwegian bands such as Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor. This scene developed the black metal style into a distinct genre.

Black metal has been met with considerable hostility from mainstream culture, mainly due to the misanthropic and anti-Christian ideology of many artists. Additionally, some musicians have been associated with church burnings, murder and/or National Socialism. For these reasons and others, black metal is often viewed as an underground form of music."

"The Second Wave of black metal emerged in the early 1990s and was largely centred on the Norwegian black metal scene. During 1990–1994 a number of Norwegian artists began performing and releasing black metal music; this included Mayhem, Burzum, Immortal, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Enslaved, Emperor , Thorns, Ildjarn, Gorgoroth, Ulver and Carpathian Forest. Some of these artists would be responsible for a rash of criminal controversy, including church burnings and murder. To this extent, members and fans of the black metal scene claimed responsibility for over 50 arsons directed at Christian churches in Norway from 1992 to 1996. Musically, these artists developed the style of their 1980s precursors as a distinct genre that was separate from thrash metal. Philosophically, an aggressive anti-Christian sentiment became a must for any artists to be finalized as "black metal". Ihsahn of Emperor believes that this trend may have developed simply from "an opposition to society, a confrontation to all the normal stuff."[11] A dark, misanthropic mentality was complemented visually with the use of corpsepaint, which was also most prevalent during this period as a statement to separate black metal artists from other rock bands of the era.[5]"

Snow is considered one of the most influential experimental filmmakers and is the subject of retrospectives in many countries. In his 2002 Village Voice review of *Corpus Callosum, J. Hoberman writes: “Rigorously predicated on irreducible cinematic facts, Snow's structuralist epics—Wavelength and La Région Centrale—announced the imminent passing of the film era. Rich with new possibilities, *Corpus Callosum heralds the advent of the next. Whatever it is, it cannot be too highly praised.” *Corpus Calossum was screened at the Toronto, Berlin, Rotterdam, and the Los Angeles film festivals amongst others. In January 2003, Snow won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, Douglas Edwards Independent Experimental Film/Video Award for *Corpus Callosum. His numerous films have premiered in major film festivals all over the world. Five of his films have premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). In 2000, TIFF commissioned Snow with Atom Egoyan and David Cronenberg to make short films, Preludes, for the 25th Anniversary of the festival. Wavelength has been designated and preserved as a "masterwork" by the Audio-Visual Preservation Trust of Canada[3] and was named #85 in the 2001 Village Voice critics' list of the 100 Best Films of the 20th Century .[4] In 2004, the film was named one of Canada's all time greatest films by the Toronto International Film Festival.[5]
